The man who invented the cash machine →
“It struck me there must be a way I could get my own money, anywhere in the world or the UK. I hit upon the idea of a chocolate bar dispenser, but replacing chocolate with cash.”
Plastic cards had not been invented, so Mr Shepherd-Barron’s machine used cheques that were impregnated with carbon 14, a mildly radioactive substance.
The machine detected it, then matched the cheque...

New teaser trailer created by Prologue for HBO’s The Pacific, the Hanks/Spielberg-produced follow-up to Band Of Brothers. The 10-part series based on books by Robert Leckie and Eugene B. Sledge follows the exploits of three US marines during World War II, and debuts March 14.
Really looking forward to this, I’ve been getting back into Band of Brothers in the meantime and...
Brilliant. I always wondered how they did this…

A webapp that “undercoats” your CSS by placing classes and IDs from your HTML into a starter stylesheet. (via Joshua Brewer)

Prohibition: A Cautionary Tale →
“On May 17, 1917, Congress forbade the sale of liquor to all men in uniform. The drys promptly launched a new slogan: “Shall the many have food or the few drink?” Congress, worried about feeding 100 million Americans and our hungry allies, responded with a ban on the use of grain to make alcohol.
On Dec. 22, 1917, Congress passed the 18th Amendment, turning the whole nation...
What have I been working on?

Yes. I’m writing the book on The Realtime Web for O’Reilly.
Not only am I writing it, but you can actually buy “Building the Realtime User Experience” today, right now in fact. And you can read it today, right now in fact. The folks at O’Reilly are really smart. They understand why this is an important topic and helped me rush it out the door, warts and all, as part of their Rough...
With all the buzz about the prospects for Apple’s supposed iSlate, I thought I’d share Knight-Ridder’s vision of the tablet computer… from 1994.
