Edward Sheriff Curtis (aka Pazola Washte) devoted nearly 30 years to documenting the lives and culture of over 80 Indian tribes west of the Mississippi. From this experience came a 20-volume collection of photographs and a silent film, both backed and supported by JP Morgan and President Rosevelt. He died, however, broke and shamed, with a short obituary that ended “Mr. Curtis was also widely known as a photographer.”
