Originally built as a massive bomb shelter during WWII, the location has a crazy past, including use as a secret service headquarters, an army base, a nuclear-bomb-proof communications center, and, in 1963, as the backbone to the hot line established between Moscow and Washington after the Cuban missile crisis.  The tunnel network, known as “underground town,”  includes cafeterias, a recreation room with dart boards and snooker tables and a movie theater. While the complex might seem intriguing, life underground is dry, hot and stale. Subway trains constantly rattle through a separate tunnel system just a few feet above. Turning the complex into a hotel or club would be unsafe as there are only two elevators to the outside world.</p> <p>Regardless….
